YouTube, MySpace, etc. Banned by Pentagon on DoD Networks

As of May 14th, the U.S. Department of Defense has begun blocking access to YouTube, BlackPlanet, Pandora, MTV, Photobukect, MySpace and several other uber-popular sites to users of the Department of Defense networks.

The DoD cite two reasons for taking such action:

  1. to lighten the demand on networks
  2. to manage the information flow from the field

Critics of this DoD move, such as Russell Shaw of ZDNet, consider censorship to be a primary motive,

I call it censorship. You don’t want soldiers posting videos that can be readily accessed by friends back home.

What do you think?
